I love being a teacher. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl, and I believe I was born to teach. There are many, many things I love about the profession. One of these things is how no day is ever exactly the same. If you're bored teaching, there is something wrong. Every day has different lessons (some on the lesson plan and some not!), different questions, decisions to make, moods and curiosity levels of students, new challenges,....and surprises. Some surprises are good, like discovering a talent or strength within a students, and some are not, such as a student nonchalantly informing you they swallowed a metal object (Oh yeah, that happened. Twice in my career actually. And I teach fifth grade). We have now been in school for seven weeks this year. While getting to know my students, I have already seen surprising strengths revealed and some not so pleasant attitudes on occasion. I can't wait to get to know them more. Every year I tell myself I have the most amazing students. How can 10 and 11 year olds be so smart, talented, and fun to be around. I'll never have a better group. Then the next group arrives and I think the same thing. There are plenty of students who present unique challenges. Every job has it's tough moments. But when May rolls around around and I see how much my students have learned and changed in the course of one year, I know that i have the best job in the world. Teaching not just a profession; it's a calling and a privilege.
