“New York is a city of daily irritations, occasional horrors, hourly tests of will and even courage, and huge dollops of pure beauty.”—Pete Hamill, Downtown
- Anonymity - In New York, I'm just one person in millions. I don't run in to people I know, I don't have to make small talk, and I can get lost in my thoughts without anyone thinking I'm being rude. Plus, it's interesting to see what other people do when they too are anonymous.
- Fashion - You can wear whatever you want in New York. (Although, you'll blend in more in dark colors.) People have their own style, and it's okay to take fashion risks. This comes in handy at the end of a two week trip when the only clean clothes left in your suitcase don't match. Throw it together anyway! It will probably be awesome.
- It's so easy to get around. - It's a huge city, but it doesn't feel like it because it's so easy to get from place to place. I wish we had subways in North Texas.
- History - So many stories from the past. Old buildings next to new buildings sitting on top of an underground maze. There are secrets and histories everywhere.
- So much to do - There's a quote that "If you're bored in New York, it's your own fault." (Myrna Loy) There's so much. Museums, shows, concerts, parks... I've spent over three weeks there with nothing to do but be a tourist. Yet, I'm going back this summer because there is still so much left to see.
- The People - The people in New York are some of the toughest, hard working people there are. Most live in tiny apartments with ridiculous rent and never get a break from the hustle and bustle of the City, but they do it because they know it's the greatest City on earth. Yet, New Yorkers still take time out to talk to strangers like me. I try not to bother them, but I have had so many approach me and talk on and on about their city. New Yorkers are much kinder and friendlier than they get credit for.
- It's like no where else in the world. - When I'm there, I kind of feel like I'm in a different world. It doesn't matter how much you see it in movies, on TV, or in books, I guarantee it will still take you by surprise when you get there. It's a different way of life than anywhere else. It's not just a bigger Dallas or an eastern Los Angeles. There is no where else like New York City.
